Man's competitive nature

So, I am a competitive person.  There, I said it.  No sense in being ashamed of it.  It's just the way I am.  I do draw the line at being really competitive against the kids.  I've been known to stack a CandyLand deck against myself when I am way too far ahead.  Do I lose every time I play against the kids?  No, they need to learn how to be good losers as well as good winners.
Unfortunately, I married a more competitive person.  Jay is not one who is willing to take a dive.  He plays to win.  Period.
Many years ago, before we were married, we purchased a PlayStation One and had a great time playing a variety of games.  Most of the games that we owned were ones that I had played before so I was able to win some and Jay (who is just better at this sort of thing) would win some as well.  I am the kind of player that needs lots and lots of practice to figure anything out.  Sometimes, I never get it.  Jay is the kind of player that needs just 2 or 3 tries and he has at least learned some of it.
About 5 years ago, I purchased a PlayStation Two for Jay.  We don't play it much.  Mostly because it leads to a fight.  Jay and I rarely ( and I do mean RARELY) fight over anything.  We have discussions, but not fights.  Playing video games leads to fights.
My points:  Jay is just on a different level when it comes to anything mental.  He is afterall a genius.  While I have an above average IQ, we operate on different mental levels.  I'm okay with that.  I learned how to be okay with it.  I know that he is going to win most games that we play, video or board.  I have learned how to accept this and for the most part I am okay with it.  I do need a chance to win though.  If there's a chance, I am competitive enough that losing over and over isn't a problem...because there's a chance I will win.  However, if after repeated tries, there is no way that I am going to beat him, it isn't fun any more.  I then ask for him to back off a bit or help me out a little.  He doesn't, so then I get frustrated.  I try a little more and then I just quit.  It's no fun.

Now, I am sure that you are thinking at this point, that I just need to be a better loser.  Yeah, probably.  BUT, I am just fine about losing if there's a chance of winning.  I just need a chance.

We played Mortal Kombat tonight for the first time on the PlayStation.  I dated a guy eons ago who was obsessed with the game and I used to play him all the time.  I didn't win much then either, but I would hold my own.  I won the first game tonight (which is two rounds) and then over the next 19 games (38 rounds), I won only two more rounds (game 2 and game 3).  Now there was a little frustration because my controller was having problems.  It stopped working in the middle of one round and I said something to Jay.  Instead of pausing to fix my controller, he just beat my character up and won the round...then fixed my controller.  I asked a couple of times for Jay to back off a little or to help me out and he didn't.  I got so frustrated that I started crying (yea, that stupid problem, again) and left.  It was no fun for me if he wouldn't back off or help or let me learn.  No one wants to lose over and over again with no hope of winning.

Of course, it was no fun for Jay to have me get upset.  He gets frustrated at me for getting upset.  We did a bit of yelling and I went upstairs for awhile to try to cool off.  I figured out some things that I wanted to say and came down and tried to talk about it again.  He still just didn't get what I was trying to say.
His point is that I shouldn't have said that he had the game all figured out and that he isn't trying to not help me out of competitiveness.  He thinks (wrongly) that we are on the same playing field.  He even pointed out that I won the first game and a couple of rounds.  Yes, I agree that we were equal at the start and maybe even for the first 5 or 6 games.  However, when it got to the point that I couldn't even get a hit on his character, round after round, we weren't equals any more.
I am probably just a sore loser.  Afterall, it's just a game.  I just wanted it to be a fun game.  Then again, maybe we shouldn't drink a couple of beers before playing.  Maybe that's what the problem is.
